What is PDF/X?
PDF/X is a subset of the PDF format that restricts certain features and enforces others. A compliant PDF/X file is guaranteed to have all fonts embedded, a defined colour space with ICC profile, correct bleed and TrimBox information, and no features that could cause unpredictable output on press.
PDF/X Variants Explained
- PDF/X-1a — strictest standard; CMYK and spot colours only, no transparency, no RGB. Required by some magazine publishers and high-end printers.
- PDF/X-3 — allows colour-managed RGB with ICC profiles. More flexible than X-1a.
- PDF/X-4 — most modern standard; supports live transparency and layers. Increasingly the default for digital and offset printing.
When in doubt, ask your print shop. PDF/X-4 is the right choice for most modern workflows.

- InDesign — File → Export → Adobe PDF (Print) → select PDF/X-4 or PDF/X-1a preset
- Illustrator — File → Save As → Adobe PDF → select PDF/X preset
- Affinity Publisher — File → Export → PDF (for print) → enable PDF/X
